Age of Stupor

You may have heard that a new 'last chance to tackle climate change' film has been released. Its name: Age of Stupid; its effect, so far fairly minimal, apart from its re-rousing of the 'converted' when it comes to such issues.

In my world, climate change (as well as its troublesome relatives - peak oil, the capitalism crunch and a gross misunderstanding of what human beings are really for) is a given, a foundational issue around which I structure my lifestyle.

Can wild fish be labeled organic?

When we buy a pork chop labeled "organic" we can assume that the pig that produced it ate only organic food, roamed outdoors from time to time, and was left free of antibiotics. An organic tomato must flourish without conventional pesticides. An organic chicken cannot be fed antibiotics.

But when it comes to deciding what makes a fish organic, it is rather baffling. How does one control the wild fish which swim in pristine waters? This is a major issue in organic aquaculture

It a...

Tales from the Allotment

Late March

It's been ten weeks since I was last formally employed in exchange for money and I've settled into a routine so naturally, I can't quite believe it. My biggest fear now is having to go back to work, something that will have to be considered in due course unless providence shines its light upon me for the rest of my working life. For the first time in thirty years of working for a living I realise what ''working for yourself'' and ''being your own ...

Surrogate motherhood or reproductive tourism?
Judy Rice wrote at 05:18:43 PM on Jun 28, 2009
The most important person involved in this is the child. Separation from its mother causes lifelong issues. How can we think in terms of satisfying our selfish needs to "have" a child, at the child's expense.

Children separated from their mothers suffer increased rates of emotional issues, higher rates of alcoholism, drug use, paraphilic sexual behaviors, dysfunctional impulse control, and the inability to maintain stable relationships. How can we sacrifice a child's well being and the future of our culture as a whole to simply satisfy our desires to nurture? Is that nurturing or something totally different?

I work with adoptees, including children from biracial adoption and surrogacy in India would be in this category because the child would be around a family that does not represent their racial background.

Is the money made worth the price the child pays? Is it worth the price of the damage done to the child that eventually makes it to our culture in ways we do not even begin to suspect because of their inability to connect with others later?

Nature had a perfect plan for children and that does not include surrogacy.
DO give up your day job

Great piece. I see the other great cult/obsession as "the cult of the couple". Both concepts - the job delusion- and - the cult of the couple - serve to isolate people from their communities. Me me me! and You and Me!

We are born to live as who we are, transparantly, with honesty and empathy as the main drivers of our existence.

Honesty and Empathy are essential aspects of happiness.

Most corporate 'careers' require dishonesty and emotional blindness for success, indeed the corporations themselves exhibit the combined emergent behaviours of thses 'workers' as much as their CEOs and Shareholders. Don't hold the Board responsible on it's own. The Sweepers at Lockheed are as much part of Lockheed as the explosions of their missiles that kill innocents..... blame is not to be equalised, responsibility is.

I always hated the idea of a 'job' which contains within it the concept of being usless if one is 'unemployed'.... that any job will do to ensure 'survival', that thrivival is thus obscured for most living beings which become mere objects to be exploited by the jobbed.

My 'job' is being myself, honestly, trnasparantly. What I do with that is what I do with that and is NOT who I am. That is what I chose to do with what I am.

Lose a job and get a life!
