I've heard it said that academics are those people who know more and more about less and less. And the urge to know something to it's n'th degree is understandable, it's surely a form of love.

The advent of wikipedia seems to have heralded the age of knowing more and more about more and more - the web, collaboration and goodwill have come together to give us just about any information we need.

If you'd like to know more and more about some of the big issues of our time - and be able to co...

Joel Salatin, celebrated hero of Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma, and owner of Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia was featured in the Washington Post last week for his latest local food endeavor – a partnership with the Mexican-style fast-food chain Chipotle. The chain, a former subsidiary of McDonald’s, will begin featuring Polyface Farm’s pork in its “carnitas” burrito at its Charlottesville location, some 45 miles from Salatin’s farm. Now, this may strike some as strange, as the ver...

In January 2008, a survey carried out by Lighter Life revealed that many British people feel there eating habits are out of control. The poll of 995 adults also found that 38% of a...

I am on the cusp of this dilemma and I do see the contradiction. I think morally it's indefensible but then how much am I bothered about the moral issue? Not yet enough. Meat is a good ingredient to meals, and I enjoy it. It's strange though because as a kid I would avoid meat, found it mostly unpalateable. I think I owe this early impression for my ability to restrain myself from consuming it everyday, making no real distinction between vegetarian and other meals, just good food. But, yes, where possible I will always go for the animal welfare option.

I like the River Cottage schemes - he suggests raising livestock for slaughter and seeing it through. I think that would make a lot of people make up their minds about the issue from first hand experience.
